Self-Care
We all know that life gets busy. Our lives consist of work, family, chores, grocery shopping, appointments, and the list goes on and on and on. Sometimes it can feel like there’s never enough time to get it all done. We can get so busy that we forget to take care of ourselves. When that happens, we sometimes find ourselves getting physically sick. Our bodies are trying to tell us to slow down, to take a minute for ourselves. Have you ever found yourself getting sick during your vacation time? Maybe, that’s the body telling us we need more down time, to take better care of ourselves. It’s okay to push yourself to get things done, just don’t push yourself to burn out, or into an illness that you can’t come back from. Self-care is taking care of yourself. Self-Care is not selfish, it’s needed. Without it, a person can feel burned out, which can lead to negative feelings toward, well, everything. You might find yourself yelling at someone because you’re exhausted. Taking a time-out from the busyness of life, will help you be a better you.
Self-Care is not selfish, it’s needed.
One of my favorite television shows is Grey’s Anatomy.** Early on in the series, a couple of the main characters, Meredith and Cristina, dance it out, during a party scene. Yes, they did do a little drinking, which I DO NOT recommend for self-care. The important part is that they took the time to dance, to let things go by dancing it out. That was one of many moments that hooked me. The tradition of dancing it out, has continued throughout the series and has included most of the other characters. Dancing it out is self-care. How many times have you seen a video of someone dancing before a surgery? It’s a form of relaxation.
Dancing it out can happen anywhere and everywhere, at any time.
Dancing and listening to music are great ways to practice self-care. Dancing is a fun form of exercise, it relieves stress Plus, you can choose whether to dance alone or with others. Dancing can be romantic or it can be all about you. You can dance it out with someone that cares about you, about your well being, also known as, your person. When it comes to the music, in my opinion, one of the best stress relieving songs in recent years is Shake It Off by Taylor Swift. How many times have you sung that song thinking about something that you needed to shake off or let go of? Speaking of letting go, thank you to Disney for Frozen and Let It Go by Idina Menzel. Another song all about self-care. Then there’s Roar by Katy Perry, which makes me feel like I can accomplish anything without burning out. What are some of your favorite Self-Care songs? Do you dance it out? Do you sing in the car? **
Methods of self-care can include a nice long hot bath or standing in the shower for a few extra minutes. Spa days, massages, are all about taking care of yourself. Yoga and meditation are peaceful, calming forms of exercise. All types of exercise are forms of self-care. Take a walk, hike a trail, go biking, enjoy the outdoors and breathe in the fresh air. Going for a long drive, while listening, and singing to the radio might be more about the journey than the destination when you find it relaxing. Sit on your porch and soak in the view. Play a video game or watch a movie. Read a book or listen to a book.

Do what brings you peace. Do what makes you happy. Do something for yourself. Self-care equals self-love. Do something that calms your soul, your inner being. Make yourself smile. Do this as often as possible, make the time for it. DO NOT wait until you burn out from the busyness of daily life. Find the time and do it, even if its only five minutes to dance it out. Take the time to be kind to yourself. Take a vacation. Go to a place you’ve dreamed about. Go someplace that you love. Get room service. Don’t cook or clean for a week. Take the time to enjoy yourself.
Self-Care equals Self-Love
Burn out leads to exhaustion which can lead to yelling, anger. Self-care leads to kindness for yourself and those around you. Be kind to yourself. Love yourself first. Self-care is important to your health, mentally and physically. Make the time for a better you. Drop a comment on how you self-care, it could help someone.
